Funding of Film Productions in Finland

The popularity of Finnish films has wildly increased during last few years. In ten years, the ratings have doubled in Finland, and Finnish films have also gained international visibility.

Film markets have expanded in recent years and therefore, a greater amount of ambitious filmmakers have gained ground in Finland. So far, the amount of annual premiers of Finnish films has increased, but the strain on funding and new cooperation models for enabling film production in the future has also grown.

Approximately 10-15 Finnish long films are produced each year. Finnish films are mainly funded with public assets, basing on so called tripartite resources; Finnish Film Foundation, The Promotion Centre for Audiovisual Culture and television companies (advance buying). In addition, funding is received from the down payment of production companies, film distributor, sponsors, and the selling of supplementary film products.
