Kid Svensk (That Special Summer)

Synopsis

Gothenburg, Sweden 1984. Twelve-year-old Kid's world has been turned upside down. Just when she's won a prestigious essay contest and with it a dream summer job at Gothenburg Radio, her mother Ester suddenly drags her off to her home village in North Karelia, Finland. Angry and confused, Kid has no choice but to go with her.

With them in the car are Ester's friend Sirkka and her thirteen-year-old son Jamppe. Kid and Jamppe have always been like brother and sister, but this summer everything changes between them.

But why is Ester being so secretive, is the trip really just a summer visit? A tangle of lies threatens to ruin everything for Kid and her mother.

Kid feels lost and let down. At home neither in Sweden nor Finland, she is caught in the middle; trapped between childhood and adolescence, herself and her mother, her desire and her rage.

A coming-of-age road movie that follows a young girl's search for identity and belonging as she takes her first awkward steps from childish romping to teenage passion and budding sexuality.
