History
East Finland has been the home to many well-known films and filmmakers. Homegrown talents like Markku Pölönen and Perttu Lepä have shared their love of the region and its rich culture in their works. Lepä with his films, The Long, Hot Summer and Pigs and Pearls. And Pölönen, with films such as: The Last Wedding, A Summer by the River, and most recently, Dog Nail Clipper, which recently earned an audience prize at the 2004 Festival du Cinéma Nordique held in Rouen, France.
In an effort to strengthen its ability to support large-scale feature film production, educational and developmental projects were created to assist both the film productions and the local community.
These educational project in place to assist Pigs and Pearls and the community network KUTKA project of Dog Nail Clipper have created a base for the regional cooperative network for film production. This network is continually developed and educated by the East Finland Film Commission.
Along with Cadimef Studios, these film projects have made Joensuu and the East Finland region a nationally competitive point of media concentration and an area of feature film production.
